Is It Safe to Drive Your Car? 3 Times to Consider Auto Towing

Posted on: 18 January 2021

Car crashes claim the lives of around 40,000 people each year. Distracted driving and impaired driving are two common causes of vehicular accidents, but mechanical defects and other car problems also play a role. Unfortunately, determining whether an automotive defect is too dangerous for the road isn't always easy. Protect yourself —and your loved ones —by arranging auto towing if you notice any of the issues below.

Damaged Tire

Many drivers are quick to request auto towing when they have a flat tire, but driving on a damaged tire is also risky. This includes tires that are punctured by nails, staples, shards of glass, and other sharp objects. Damaged tires may also have sidewall indentations, bulges, or cracks.

After hitting a pothole, curb, or another object, check for signs of damage before you head home. You should also keep an eye on your tires if you're overdue for a safety inspection or notice visual signs of wear and tear, such as treads that are more smooth than textured. If you are unsure whether your tires are too damaged for the road, play it safe and request a tow.

Cracked Windshield

Cold weather, flying debris, and faulty wipers can crack your windshield, making it difficult to see the road as you drive. However, you should also avoid driving even if a windshield crack doesn't obstruct your view. Your car's windshield plays an important role in maintaining the structure of your vehicle; without it, the roof can collapse on you and your passengers.

A windshield also provides a barrier if an accident occurs, but a damaged windshield may shatter rather than block ejection during a crash. A cracked windshield can also affect how your airbags function. During a crash, airbags may not deploy if a windshield is cracked.

Power Steering Problems

When a power steering system initially fails, some drivers still feel comfortable driving. They mistakenly believe that as long as they jerk the steering wheel harder, they can get where they need to go. This may work at first, but as the damage worsens, your steering wheel may not turn at all. This can result in a crash due to your inability to turn left or right rather than heading into oncoming traffic or avoiding a large object.

If you experience any of the issues above, visit a mechanic who provides auto repair service in your area. An auto towing company can deliver your vehicle to the repair shop if driving on your own isn't a safe option. Make smart choices on the road, and don't be afraid to ask for help when needed. It might just save your life.
