When You've Been In An Accident: Tips For While You Wait For A Tow Truck To Arrive

Posted on: 3 April 2017

If you've been in a car accident and your car needs to be picked up by a tow truck, there are a number of things you can do to keep you and your vehicle safe while you wait for the tow truck to arrive. If possible, pull your car over to the side of the road, turn on your hazard lights, and use basic safety equipment to alert other drivers that you are stuck on the side of the road. Even if you are just waiting for a flat tire to be changed, you still need to keep yourself safe in the meantime.

Hazard Lights Indicate Trouble

When you turn on your hazard lights, this is a universal symbol that you are having problems with your car. You can find your hazard lights in the center of your dashboard, or near your steering column. The symbol is usually orange, and when you press down on your hazard light button, your hazard lights will begin blinking. This lets people know you are having trouble but also makes your car easier to see in the dark or in bad weather.

Get to the Side of the Road as Far as Possible

The last place you want to end up when you have a broken down car is in the middle of the road. If possible, get your car as far as possible from any traffic. You'll want to get onto the shoulder if possible, which will allow room for the tow truck to arrive. When you are out of the direct line of traffic, you won't risk getting hit by a car coming by and the tow truck driver will be able to find you more easily.

If You Have Flares

If you have any road flares or reflective triangles, it's time to pull these out to alert drivers that your car is disabled. These should be placed at about forty feet from your vehicle and again at ten feet. When you light the flares, other cars will be able to see you and avoid your vehicle on the side of the road.

Take Your Important Objects from the Car

Check in your car and make sure you have gathered together your phone, wallet, and any other important items you have in your car. Your car may be at the garage for several weeks, and you may end up heading back to the garage to get your work bag in the back seat if you forgot about it.
